The Insurance Claims Battlefield
Your insurance company is a for-profit corporation. Every dollar they don’t pay you is a dollar they keep. This is not customer service; this is a financial negotiation. Prepare accordingly.
The Claims Index
1. The Golden Rule of Insurance Claims
The adjuster assigned to your case is not a bad person, but they are playing by a strict set of corporate rules designed to limit the carrier’s financial exposure. The golden rule of this industry is: He who documents the most, wins.
If the adjuster writes an estimate for 25 squares of shingles, and your roof actually requires 32 squares, calling them and yelling will not change the price. You must submit a satellite roof measurement report (like an EagleView), a diagram of the waste factor, and photographic proof of the slope dimensions. You must defeat them with irrefutable data.
2. The Danger of the First Check
The ACV Lowball
When the claim is approved, the insurance company will send you an initial check that is shockingly small. Do not panic. This is the Actual Cash Value (ACV) check. They have subtracted your deductible AND the depreciated age of your roof. They are hoping you will look at this tiny check, decide you can’t afford the new roof, and cancel the project (which allows them to keep the rest of the money). You must execute the work to unlock the withheld funds.
