Covered Perils: Hail Damage Hub

A hailstorm just rolled through your neighborhood. Do not assume your roof is fine just because it isn’t leaking today. Discover the hidden mechanics of kinetic impact and protect your property value.

Hail Impact Severity Matrix

Did you find ice in your yard? Input the size of the hail and your roofing material to calculate the probability of functional damage.

1. Functional vs. Cosmetic Damage

Insurance companies do not pay to make your roof look pretty; they pay to maintain its structural integrity. When evaluating a hail claim, adjusters divide the damage into two categories:

  • Cosmetic Damage: The hail knocked some granules into the gutters or put a shallow, smooth dent in a metal panel, but the material is still perfectly waterproof. This is often excluded from coverage.
  • Functional Damage: The kinetic impact of the ice was so violent that it fractured the fiberglass mat inside the asphalt shingle, or crushed the interlocking seam of a metal panel. This compromises the lifespan of the roof and is fully covered.

2. The “Silent Leaker” Timeline

The Statute of Limitations Trap

A bruised asphalt shingle will not leak on the day of the storm. The hail cracks the fiberglass mat, but the asphalt core holds it together. However, over the next 12 to 18 months, the summer sun bakes the exposed asphalt, and the winter ice expands the crack. By year two, water penetrates the decking and destroys your ceiling. If you wait for the leak to appear, your insurance company’s 1-year statute of limitations to file a storm claim has already expired. You must diagnose the roof immediately after the storm.

3. The Visual Diagnostic Directory

To win a hail claim, you must be able to visually prove functional damage. We have isolated the diagnostic process by material and tactic. Select your deep-dive guide below:

What Authentic Hail Damage Looks Like

Hail Damage vs. Heat Blisters

Adjusters are explicitly trained to deny hail claims by calling the bald spots “thermal blistering” (a manufacturer defect). Learn how to use the ‘Thumb Test’ to prove them wrong.

Metal Roofs: The Cosmetic Exclusion

Because metal roofs dent easily, insurance carriers invented the “Cosmetic Exclusion” endorsement to avoid paying for them. Learn how to prove the dents caused functional seam failure.

DIY Storm Damage Assessment

You don’t need a ladder to know if your roof is damaged. Use our ground-level perimeter checklist to look for collateral damage on downspouts, screens, and AC fins before calling a contractor.
